Summary of Interest
My primary research interest centers behavioral and mental health issues in P-20 education, with a specific focus on the impact of traumatic life events and traumatic stress on staff, faculty, and leadership. Studies conducted by members of the Center for Disease Control cite the rise in adverse childhood experiences that my later manifest in adult behavioral and mental health concerns. Additionally, the American College Counselors Association cites an increase in the severity of issues for which college students seek professional help. Much attention has been focused on addressing these trends, yet little research, particularly within the area of education, has addressed the tangential impact of trauma on those who support students, but may not be professionally trained to provide such support: teachers, administrators, students affairs staff, college faculty, etc. The goal of my research and practice is to provide a better understanding of these impacts, and promote wellness, so that educators are equipped to support students experiencing crisis without experiencing severe psychological harm themselves.
